Born (1901) and raised in the Gallup House, Jefferson, Iowa, he dedicated his life to asking questions to learn about people. His respect and interest for what each individual had to say made him one of the century's keenest listeners. He never tired of saying that there were billions of ways to live a life and we should study each one.

George Gallup's forbearers, after arriving in America in 1630, lived for eight generations in Stonington, CT. It was Gallup's grandfather, John
Gallup, who moved from Voluntown, which is near
Stonington, to Mendota, IL where he joined the Northern Arm, and then after the Civil war, came eventually to the town of Jefferson.
